METHODS FOR REMOVING GUM FROM CONCRETE

The best methods of removing gum from concrete depends on how long the gum has been there and the level of penetration into the concrete surface. If the gum was left not long ago and it has not penetrated the surface yet, we might be able to get it off by covering it with ice until the gum freezes, then scraping the gum off with a putty knife.

The ice forces the chewing gum to freeze into a workable substance compared to a gooey and sticky mess. Once that happens, we slide a metal putty knife or scraper under the gum residue. Next we move the scraper slowly under the gum and the entire piece should then peel right off of the concrete.

The above process is only possible with brand new gum.

When we remove gum that has turned black, or is smashed deep down into the concrete, we use a hot water power washer with the heat dialed up to 200 Degrees to melt the gum. For this type of gum removal, we don’t use high pressure because that will sometimes damage the surface of the concrete!

Our crew never uses more pressure than necessary to clean concrete surfaces. These surfaces can be destroyed much easier than most people think, especially if they’re only 1-2 years old. Concrete can require up to 100 years to cure completely. That is why we always use hot water and the least amount of pressure possible for our professional chewing gum removal service.
